What Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation is a surgical breast procedure done to increase your breast size or to enhance the shape of your breasts by using implants or fat from elsewhere on your body. Also called augmentation mammoplasty or a boob job, it’s one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery.

The best breast augmentation surgeons recognize that the appearance of your breasts affect your confidence and overall mental health. Dr. David Shokrian and Dr. Mohamed Soliman Ahmed Elfar of New York Breast Surgery Center are among the top breast augmentation surgeons in Long Island and Manhattan. Along with breast augmentation, they provide expert care for other breast procedures, including:

What Are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation Surgery?

If you’re unhappy with the way your breasts look — either because they seem too small or you’re concerned they don’t look as good as they used to due to aging, pregnancy or weight loss — breast augmentation is a safe, surgical solution. The key benefits of this procedure include:

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery in Long Island?

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation as long as you’re in good health and you’re making the change in your appearance because it’s something you want rather than for someone else. Other factors that make you a good candidate for this procedure include:

“Almost any woman whose breasts have fully matured is a potential candidate for augmentation,” says Dr. Shokrian. “But there’s a limit to the size you can add. You learn all about the procedure and the recovery at your initial consultation.”

  • Being dissatisfied with your breast size or appearance
  • Having realistic expectations about what surgery can accomplish
  • Being realistic about the impact larger breasts can have on your life
  • Not being pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Living with one breast that’s larger than the other, causing you discomfort
  • Experiencing no health problems that can impair your healing

What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants?

Along with your plastic surgeon’s guidance, you decide between the various types of breast implants, based on the change you’re looking to make. You can choose the size, shape and filling material. The differences in each type impact your results, and they include:

Size. Breast augmentation surgery can provide a subtle enhancement or a much larger profile than you currently have.
Shape. Some women prefer an implant that’s full all around for a voluptuous look, while others want a more natural look.
Texture. Implants have either a smooth, soft feeling or a textured feeling. Textured implants are less likely to ripple or move around.

Your decision depends on several factors, including your current anatomy and your partiality on issues like size and feel or shape and projection. When you set up a consultation to find out what’s involved in the best breast augmentation, an experienced plastic surgeon thoroughly explains the different choices and makes recommendations based on your goals and preferences.

Alternatively, you can opt for a fat transfer breast augmentation. This is a type of augmentation that’s done by harvesting fat from another area of your body, such as your abdomen or hip, using liposuction. That fat is processed to remove impurities and then injected into your breasts. This approach is a proven method to provide a natural look and feel, but it only allows for an increase of up to one cup size, so it won’t help if you’re looking for a major increase in breast size.

Silicone vs. Saline vs. Gummy Bear Implants

What Are the Differences Between Silicone vs. Saline vs. Gummy Bear Implants?

The three most common types of breast implants are saline-filled, silicone-filled and gummy bear-shaped implants. The differences include:

Saline-filled implants

are the more traditional breast implants. They’re silicon shells filled with sterile salt water and have a firmer feel, although structured saline implants contain an inner structure to help the implant feel more natural. If the outer shell ever leaks, which rarely happens with new models, the implant collapses, but your body naturally and safely absorbs the saline. According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, saline implants are FDA-approved for women aged 18 and older.

Silicone-filled implants

contain silicone gel that feels more like natural breast tissue. Leaks are increasingly rare, but if these implants leak, they don’t deflate, since your body can’t absorb the silicone. Your NYC plastic surgeon monitors silicone implants with regular MRIs or ultrasounds to make sure it doesn’t leak. Silicone implants are approved for women aged 22 and older.

Gummy bear implants

are also called form-stable implants. These implants maintain their shape even if the outer shell breaks. The gel in these implants is highly cohesive, making them less prone to shifting or leakage, while also preventing sagging over time.

According to Dr. Shokrian: “The latest Motiva implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They have built-in technological advances that allow us to continue to monitor their health over time. We offer them, but don’t push them on you; it’s your decision.”

What Do I Need to Know about Breast Implant Shapes?

Since women want different changes to their breasts, implant manufacturers have continued to offer new types and shapes. So when you’re in a consultation with a top plastic surgeon, one of the decisions you need to make is what shape you prefer. Your surgeon explains the differences and may make recommendations.

Currently, your choices are round or teardrop-shaped. Your decision depends on your physical size and your aesthetic goals. Consider:

Round breast implants

Round breast implants

also called contoured implants, result in more fullness around both the top and the bottom of your breast. This provides improved symmetry and an attractive cleavage. Since these implants are round all the way around, there’s little chance of them rolling out of place. Round implants usually cost less than teardrop-shaped implants.

Teardrop implants

Teardrop implants

also called anatomical implants, are narrower on top and fuller at the bottom, which more closely resembles the natural shape of the breast. They’re a good choice for women who want a low-key enhancement, rather than a dramatic change in shape.

What Are My Options for
Breast Implant Sizes and
Profiles?

Implant sizes are measured in cubic centimeters (cc) rather than cup size, since cup sizes can vary between bra styles and manufacturers. What you need to know about sizes include:

  • Increasing your breasts one cup size requires about 200 cc.
  • Most breast augmentations use implants that range from 200 to 500 cc.
  • Women who want a subtle, natural-looking increase in breast size or have a petite frame usually choose implants ranging from 125 to 200 cc.
  • Moderate fullness requires 200 to 300 cc.
  • A dramatic increase of two cup sizes or more requires at least 400 cc.

The implant profile refers to how far the implant protrudes from your chest. For example:

  • Low-profile implants have a refined, natural slope.
  • A moderate profile provides more fullness without giving up a natural appearance.
  • High-profile implants have a narrower base with more forward projection, a good choice if you’re looking for a dramatic, rounded look with noticeable cleavage.

Each implant type has advantages that your NYC plastic surgeon explains. The features of different breast implant sizes, shapes and profiles help you decide which is right for you. The plastic surgeons at New York Breast Surgery Center are committed to delivering the best possible results from your breast augmentation surgery.

What Are the Different Types of Incisions Used in Breast Augmentation Surgery?

There are four incision types that a plastic surgeon may use in breast augmentation surgery. They include:

Peri-areolar

This is the most common incision method for a good boob job. Your surgeon makes an incision at the bottom of your areola, which hides the scar well.

Inframammary

Another common incision type, this uses the crease under your breast. It works well when placing silicone implants, since it gives the surgeon maximum access.

TUBA

For a transumbilical breast augmentation, your surgeon makes an incision in your navel area, tunneling up to your breast. You can only get a TUBA incision if you’re getting saline implants, since these implants are placed while deflated and filled with saline afterward.

Transaxillary

Like the TUBA incision, this approach is for saline implants only. Your plastic surgeon inserts the empty implant through a small incision in your armpit by tunneling to your breast. Once in place, it’s filled with the predetermined amount of saline.

“The incision type we use depends on your body type, the type of implant and your aversion to scarring,” says Dr. Shokrian. “We work with you to provide the best breast augmentation for your needs and budget.”

What Can I Expect During the 24-Hour Recovery Experience after Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Some women are reluctant to get a good boob job because they’re worried about the downtime, but innovative techniques make it possible for many women to recover from breast augmentation much more quickly than in the past. Sometimes, you may mostly recover from the surgery in the first 24 hours.

Dr. Shokrian: “We use a refined surgical method to reduce tissue trauma, so you experience less pain, swelling and downtime. With this method, we can minimize bleeding and even avoid surgical drains.”

After your procedure, you’re encouraged to resume some light activities in the first 24 hours, such as walking, showering and driving. Gentle movement reduces stiffness and stimulates circulation. You may experience some discomfort at first, but since there’s minimal tissue damage, you shouldn’t need narcotic pain relievers.

FAQs

Don’t find the answer? We can help

How is a 24-hour recovery possible?

The plastic surgeons at New York Breast Surgery Center use the most up-to-date procedures. The “no drain” technique and muscle-sparing dissection make it possible for you to heal much more quickly. Precision during surgery leads to less trauma, which is the key to faster healing. You can resume many of your daily activities as quickly as 24 hours after surgery.

How much does a breast augmentation cost?

Your breast augmentation cost depends on a combination of factors, such as the type and complexity of your surgical procedure. The cost typically runs between $18,000 and $25,000 in New York City, not including the facility and anesthesia fees. Breast augmentation is rarely covered by insurance unless it’s done as part of reconstruction after a mastectomy. New York Breast Surgery Center is out-of-network for insurance, but the staff can help you determine what out-of-network coverage is available. Financing plans are also available.

When can I sleep on my side after breast augmentation?

When you can return to side-sleeping depends on how well you’re healing. You need your surgeon’s clearance. In general, avoid sleeping on your side for at least three weeks. Sleeping on your back or with your chest elevated for this amount of time minimizes swelling, prevents implant displacement and protects the incision sites. Keeping pressure off your implants helps them settle into place.

How long is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery usually lasts one to two hours, longer if it’s combined with another procedure, such as a breast lift.

    Is breast augmentation safe?

Techniques for breast augmentation continue to advance, and FDA-approved implants undergo extensive testing to demonstrate reasonable assurance of safety. Most women who have breast augmentation experience no serious complications. There are some risks with any type of surgery, but you can lower these risks by entrusting your care to Dr. Shokrian or Dr. Elfar, both highly reputable surgeons with extensive experience.

When can I stop wearing a bra after breast augmentation?

The amount of time you need to shed your bra varies. After surgery, your breasts are wrapped in gauze and an elastic bandage or supportive surgical bra. You need this support around the clock, for a few weeks. Your surgeon lets you know when you can go braless. Avoid underwire bras for up to six weeks.

Do I need to prepare for breast augmentation?

Your plastic surgeon’s pre-op instructions may include adjustments to your medications, such as discontinuing aspirin or other blood thinners for a few days before surgery. If you’re a smoker, it’s a good idea to quit before surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you to the procedure and to stay with you the first night after surgery.

What breast augmentation sizes are available?

Breast implants come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and profiles. Your plastic surgeon helps you select the best size and shape for you, based on your anatomy and your goals.
